Oil Stain

Professional Natural Oil-Based Wood Stain
Transform wood surfaces with rich, customisable colour and exceptional durability. Osmo Oil Stain is a high-performance professional stain that delivers a smooth, even finish to wooden flooring and furniture. With just one coat, it provides a transparent wash of colour that highlights the grain. Apply a second coat to achieve a deeper, more intensive tone, giving you complete control over the final look.
Once the desired colour is achieved, seal it with Osmo Polyx®-Oil for long-lasting protection against daily wear, moisture, and spills.
Recommended for: Osmo Oil Stain is ideal as a coloured primer for all wooden floors, such as solid wood and plank flooring, blockstrip, OSB and cork flooring, as well as stairs and furniture.
Unmatched Colour Intensity
From soft transparent tones to rich, dramatic shades—including deep blacks that create striking, modern finishes. Its smooth, even absorption delivers professional results across all wood species, letting you achieve everything from subtle warmth to bold, designer-worthy statements.

Oil Stain Colours
*3501 White: An intensely white surface for flooring is not recommended as it is more susceptible to dirt, stains, damage, and the natural yellowing process. As a top coat for such surfaces, the pigmented Polyx®-Oils 3040 or 3240 (White transparent) is recommended.
**3519 Natural: A thin coat is recommended either with Osmo Microfibre Roller or Osmo Floor Brush 150 mm. After drying, a coat with a clear Osmo Polyx®- Oil should be carried out. The natural colour tone of wood is preserved – it does not enhance the tone of wood, no permanent wet effect. This finish leaves white streaks on red/dark wood species.
Note: The colour shades shown are a true likeness of the original, after application onto Oak. However, some variation may occur due to screen brightness and uploading processes. It is advisable to test colours on a small sample, as colour may appear differently on other wood species.
Choosing the right application tool
We recommend approx 60g/m² coverage for highest durability and best stain-resistance; especially for high-wear surfaces like floors, stairs, tabletops, countertops and cutting boards.
Different applicators will provide different results in regard to colour and the number of coats needed.
Before applying any Osmo finish, proper sanding is essential. For step-by-step guidance and expert tips on preparing flooring, furniture, and exterior wood, visit our Sanding Preparation page.
Stir the finish well prior to use.
- With an Osmo Double Blade Scraper, Microfibre Roller or Osmo Floor Brush, apply Oil Stain very thinly and evenly into the wood surface. For smaller areas, e.g. furniture, Osmo Oil Stain can be applied with a lint-free cloth. Massage it into the surface with a clean white pad. Brush marks can be removed with a clean Microfibre Roller within 30 minutes of application.
- Allow approx. 12 hours (normal climatic conditions, 73°F / 50% rel. humidity). Lower temperatures and/or higher humidity can affect drying time. Ensure space is well ventilated. For an intensive colour (2 coats)
- To achieve an intense colour tone, apply a second coat of Oil Stain the same way as the first.
- Allow 12 hours drying time.
Important: After thoroughly drying, a top coat of Osmo Polyx®-Oil needs to be applied for long-lasting protection against daily wear, moisture, and spills. Find the application instructions for Polyx®-Oil here.
Cure Period: Osmo hardwax-oils like all finishes have a cure period. We recommend allowing 2-3 weeks for the surface to fully cure and harden prior to damp-mopping or placing rugs/mats on the surface.
Different applicators will provide different results in regard to colour and the number of coats needed. For the highest durability and stain resistance, we recommend applying approx 60g/m² total coverage.
Microfibre Roller = Applies 30g/m² per coat – fastest application. 2 coats recommended.
Flat Brush = Applies 20g/m² per coat – best for textured surfaces and colour. 2-3 coats recommended.
Oil Applicator Fleece = Applies 15g/m² per coat – user-friendly, small build, medium colour intensity. 3 coats recommended.
White Superpad = Applies 10g/m² per coat – minimalistic finish, lower product waste, can be buffed to high luster. Not recommended for high-wear surfaces.
Cloth = Applies 5g/m² per coat – minimalistic finish and creates subtle colours. Not recommended for high-wear surfaces.
