The Evolution of Osmo Wood Finishes

In 1964, Osmo began developing durable, high-quality wood finishes to improve on traditional lacquers and varnishes that cracked and peeled. This research led to the launch of Wood Wax Finish Clear Extra Thin in 1978, the world’s first brushable oil/wax, and in 1997, the groundbreaking Polyx®-Oil became the first finish to combine oil and hardwaxes into a new type of durable finish now known worldwide as “Hardwax-Oil”.

Application Methods

Different species of wood require different amounts of product to achieve the highest durability and stain resistance. This is especially important for finishing high-traffic areas like flooring, stairs, countertops, and cutting boards.

Wood species and their recommended application amounts →

Different applicators will provide different results in regard to colour and the number of coats needed. Choose the best application method or mix and match to achieve the recommended amount of finish for your chosen wood species.

Microfibre Roller = Applies 30g/m² per coat – fastest application. 2 coats recommended.

Flat Brush = Applies 20g/m² per coat – best for textured surfaces and colour. 2-3 coats recommended.

Oil Applicator Fleece = Applies 15g/m² per coat – user-friendly, small build, medium colour intensity. 3 coats recommended.

White Superpad = Applies 10g/m² per coat – minimalist finish, lower product waste, can be buffed to high luster. Not recommended for high-wear surfaces.

Cloth = Applies 5g/m² per coat – minimalist finish and creates subtle colours. Not recommended for high-wear surfaces.

Before applying any Osmo finish, proper sanding is essential. For step-by-step guidance and expert tips on preparing flooring, furniture, and exterior wood, visit our Sanding Preparation page.

Stir the finish well prior to use.

  1. Using the Osmo Microfiber Roller, or Osmo Floor Brush, apply Polyx®-Oil thinly and evenly in the direction of the grain.
  2. Do not remove excess product, this will absorb into the wood surface over the drying period.
  3. Drying time approx. 8 – 10 hours (normal climatic conditions, 73°F / 50% rel. humidity). Lower temperatures and/or higher humidity can affect drying time. Ensure space is well ventilated.

Second Coat:

  1. Apply the second coat of Polyx®-Oil thinly and evenly, as before. Remove excess product after 5 – 10 minutes. Alternatively, you can apply the second coat with a scraper and buff the surface with a clean white pad.
  2. Allow 8 – 10 hours drying time.
  3. When thoroughly dry, the surface can be buffed or polished with a hand polisher or floor buffing machine.Note: For high-quality finishes on items like tabletops, a smoother result can be achieved by lightly sanding the surface after the second coat has fully dried with a P320 or P400 grit sandpaper, and then buffing 1-2 extra coats with a cloth or white pad.

Third Coat: Usually, a third coat is not required; however, highly absorbent or dry timbers may appear to require a third coat.

Please consult OSMO technical support at 1-844-OSMOCAN prior to carrying out a third coat

Cure Period: Osmo Polyx®-Oil(s) like all finishes, have a cure period. We recommend allowing 2-3 weeks for the surface to fully cure and harden before damp-mopping or placing rugs/mats on the surface.

Not recommended for high-wear surfaces like flooring,  floors, stairs, tabletops, countertops and cutting boards.

Apply 2-3 thin coats with an Osmo Fleece Applicator.

Stir the finish well prior to use.

  1. Using an Osmo Fleece applicator, work Polyx®-Oil thinly and evenly into the surface. A Fleece applicator is the best method for ensuring you avoid over-application and doesn’t require the product to be buffed out or excess removed.
  2. Drying time approx. 8 – 10 hours (normal climatic conditions, 73°F / 50% rel. humidity). Lower temperatures and/or higher humidity can affect drying time. Ensure space is well ventilated.

Subsequent Coats: Apply following Polyx®-Oil coats thinly and evenly, as before.

Note: If high durability is required (ie. Floors and Tabletops) we suggest applying Polyx®-Oil using the Brush or Roller technique.

Cleaning And Maintenance Made Simple

Although extremely tough and highly durable, a hardwax-oil finish, like all others is not indestructible and does require maintenance over time. With periodic cleaning and maintenance, surfaces treated with Osmo can have the same beauty decades later.

Surfaces should be regularly cleared of dirt and debris. To clean surfaces finished with Osmo, use the Osmo Wash and Care (for flooring) or Osmo Spray Cleaner (for smaller surfaces) only. This detergent contains a small amount of the natural oils in the finish to maintain a hydrated surface. To minimise ordinary staining and scratches, place breathable mats on flooring around sinks and other food prep areas, entryways, or other areas exposed to outdoor elements. If flooring or surfaces begin to stain easily and water stops beading on the surface, it may be an indication that it’s time for a refresh!

Wash and Care detergent – can be used at a concentrated level (up to 1:1) to remove stains. This is particularly effective against acidic stains.

Liquid Wax Cleaner – This wax concentrate is effective against grease and oil-based stains. Doesn’t require diluting and should be applied directly to the stain and gently scrubbed.

Tannin Spot Remover – Highly effective removal of black spots and other stains caused by things such as metal and water in contact with tannin-containing woods. ie. Oak.

Minor scratches and blemishes can be easily repaired with Liquid Wax Cleaner. Apply directly to the affected area and gently scrub. This will make damage less visible and restore moisture resistance to the surface.

Osmo Maintenance Oil is ideal for maintaining the Osmo finish on flooring and is highly recommended for high-traffic areas like entryways, stairs and commercial interiors (restaurants etc). Clean debris away with a vacuum and ensure the surface is dry. With an Osmo Double Blade Scraper or Osmo Microfibre Roller, apply thinly and evenly in the direction of the grain. Buff with a White Scotchbrite Pad until excess is removed and allow 3-4 hours to dry. For smaller areas, Osmo Maintenance Oil can be applied with a lint-free cloth.
