Meet Warren Turnbull of Hutch Custom

At Hutch Custom, craftsmanship meets creativity in every piece. Based in the southern suburbs of Cape Town, South Africa, Hutch Custom specializes in fine furniture that seamlessly blends traditional woodworking techniques with a modern aesthetic. We caught up with Warren Turnbull, of Hutch Custom to learn more about his inspirations, his favourite Osmo finishes, and what exciting projects he has on the horizon.

“I believe great design should feel intuitive and timeless.”

What do you specialize in?

I specialize in crafting one-of-a-kind fine furniture pieces, blending traditional woodworking techniques with a refined modern aesthetic. My focus is always on craftsmanship, attention to detail, and allowing the natural beauty of the timber to take centre stage.

As a woodworker, where do you get your inspiration from?

I’m inspired by a combination of mid-century modern design, contemporary architecture, and the materials themselves. Often, it’s the grain, tone, or character of a particular piece of wood that sparks the entire concept for a piece. I believe great design should feel intuitive and timeless.

What are you the most excited about this year?

This year I’m launching a few new collections and growing Hutch Custom’s presence internationally. I’m also curating and hosting The Makers Festival SA in Cape Town — a massive celebration of craftsmanship across woodworking, leatherwork, ceramics, and more. It’s shaping up to be a big year for creativity and community!

Do you have any advice for someone looking to enter your field?

Respect the craft and stay patient. Skill is built over time, and there’s no substitute for putting in the hours at the bench. Also, don’t be afraid to develop your own design voice — your individuality is your biggest strength.

We’ve asked you to share some of your favourite furniture pieces that are finished with Osmo, can you tell us what makes them special to you?

Each piece I’ve finished with Osmo feels alive — the finish enhances the natural character of the timber without overpowering it. One of my favourites is The Kaasir Media Unit, where the subtlety and cleanliness of Osmo brought out in the White Oak elevated the entire design. It’s special because it reflects my philosophy perfectly: a modern silhouette rooted in traditional craft.

What is your favourite Osmo product and why?

Hands down, Osmo Polyx®-Oil 3051 Raw (3044 in Europe). It’s unmatched for bringing out the depth and richness of the wood while offering a durable, natural-feeling finish. I love that it preserves the honesty of the timber — it still feels like wood under your fingertips.
