Meet the Maker: Alex Stap of Galt Wood Company, Cambridge, Ontario
This month, we’re highlighting Alex Stap, the Ontario-based woodworker behind Galt Wood Company. Alex specializes in custom solid-wood furniture and millwork, known for clean design, precision, and a deep respect for the natural character of wood.
With nearly a decade of experience, Alex has grown from building pieces for himself into running a full-time woodworking business. His approach is guided by the grain, colour, and movement of the material, and he leans toward finishes that enhance wood rather than hide it—one of the reasons Osmo has become a go-to in his shop.
In this feature, Alex shares what inspires his designs, how he chooses his finishes, what projects excite him most, and the tools and lessons that have shaped his work. He also walks us through one of his favourite Osmo-finished pieces and offers advice for emerging woodworkers.
Take a closer look at the craft behind Galt Wood Company below.

Who are you and what do you specialize in?
I’m Alex Stap from Galt Wood Company in Ontario. I build custom solid-wood furniture and millwork with a focus on clean design and quality craftsmanship.
How long have you been practicing? How did you get started?
I’ve been woodworking for nearly a decade. I started by building pieces for myself and quickly fell in love with the craft, which eventually grew into my full-time business.
What inspires your designs and choice of materials?
I take inspiration from other makers as well as the wood itself. The grain, colour, and natural character of the material often guide the design.
What’s your biggest frustration when finishing wood?
Before switching to hardwax oils, it was dealing with messy, smelly polyurethane that took forever to dry.
How do you choose your finishes?
I look for finishes that enhance the wood without making it look plastic or overdone. Natural, warm, and clean is the goal.
What’s your favourite type of project to work on?
Projects with lots of components—like large cabinet builds. I enjoy the complexity and precision they require.
What do you value most in a wood finish?
Ease of use and appearance—especially how it brings out grain and colour naturally.
Tell us about a favourite piece you’ve finished with Osmo.
My White Oak Alba Collection coffee table. It involved multi-laminate bending, and Osmo made the grain pop without looking artificial.

How do you feel about maintaining Osmo-finished pieces?
It’s simple. My clients appreciate that they can keep their pieces looking great without tools or harsh chemicals.
Favourite Osmo product?
Osmo Polyx®-Oil.
Do you have any advice for someone entering woodworking?
Don’t be afraid to make mistakes. Learning to fix them is part of becoming a good woodworker.
What tool can you not live without?
My 6” Mirka sander.
What is something you wish you knew sooner in your career?
How to use a CAD program like Fusion 360—it would’ve streamlined my early design process.
What are you most excited about this year?
Continuing to grow as both a maker and a business owner.
