Why Choose a Food-Safe Hardwax Oil for Countertops?

Unlike polyurethane or film-forming finishes, hardwax oils like Osmo Chopping Board Oil soak into the wood and cure within the fibers, offering natural, breathable protection. This creates a non-toxic, food-safe surface that won’t crack, peel, or blister—even in humid kitchens.

Chopping Board Oil has been independently certified as food-safe, chemically resistant, and contains well below the limits of leachable heavy metals, making it safe for use on children’s toys.

Application Methods

Different species of wood require different amounts of product to achieve the highest durability and stain resistance. This is especially important for finishing high-traffic areas like flooring, stairs, countertops, and cutting boards.

Before applying any Osmo finish, proper sanding is essential. For step-by-step guidance and expert tips on preparing flooring, furniture, and exterior wood, visit our Sanding Preparation page.

Stir the finish well prior to use.

First Coat:

  1. Using the Osmo Brush, Roller, or an Oil Finish Applicator Fleece, work Chopping Board Oil thinly and evenly in all directions across the wood surface.
  2. Drying time approx. 8 – 10 hours (normal climatic conditions, 73°F / 50% relative humidity). Lower temperatures and/or higher humidity can affect drying time. Ensure space is well ventilated.
  3. Clean brushes with Osmo Brush Cleaner and Thinner (benzene-free) or Turpentine.Second Coat:
  1. Apply the second coat of Chopping Board Oil thinly and evenly, in all directions across the wooden surface as before.
  2. Allow 8-10 hours drying time.
  3. Clean brushes with Osmo Brush Cleaner and Thinner (benzene-free) or Turpentine.

Note: After 2-3 weeks, the surface will be fully cured. Applying the product too generously and insufficient ventilation will lead to a delay in drying time.

Food-Safe: Chopping Board Oil is certified food-safe when fully dry.

Harsh, abrasive surface cleaners will strip the protective oils and waxes from the wood and will require more frequent reapplication of Chopping Board Oil. When the surface begins to show wear, and liquids stop beading, refresh it with a new coat of Chopping Board Oil – simply apply and buff; no sanding needed.

Only one coat is needed for re-application.

Stir the finish well prior to use.

  1. Using a lint-free cloth like Osmo Easy Pads, or Oil Applicator Fleece, apply one thin coat to the surface.
  2. Drying time approx. 8-10 hours (normal climatic conditions, 73°F / 50% relative humidity). Lower temperatures and/or higher humidity can affect drying time. Ensure space is well ventilated.

WARNING: Cloths saturated with product are a spontaneous combustion hazard and should be left out unfolded until dried, prior to disposal or preferably stored in a proper fireproof can.

Food-Safe: Chopping Board Oil is certified food-safe when fully dry.

Different applicators will provide different results in regard to colour and the number of coats needed. Choose the best application method or mix and match to achieve the recommended amount of finish for your chosen wood species.

Microfibre Roller = Applies 30g/m² per coat – fastest application. 2 coats recommended.

Flat Brush = Applies 20g/m² per coat – best for textured surfaces and colour. 2-3 coats recommended.

Oil Applicator Fleece = Applies 15g/m² per coat – user-friendly, small build, medium colour intensity. 3 coats recommended.

White Superpad = Applies 10g/m² per coat – minimalist finish, lower product waste, can be buffed to high luster. Not recommended for high-wear surfaces.

Cloth = Applies 5g/m² per coat – minimalist finish and creates subtle colours. Not recommended for high-wear surfaces.

Cleaning And Maintenance Made Simple

Although extremely tough and highly durable, a hardwax-oil finish, like all others is not indestructible and does require maintenance over time. With periodic cleaning and maintenance, surfaces treated with Osmo can have the same beauty decades later.

To clean surfaces finished with Osmo Chopping Board Oil, use Osmo Spray Cleaner only. This detergent contains a small amount of the natural oils in the finish to maintain a hydrated surface.

Wash and Care detergent – can be used at a concentrated level (up to 1:1) to remove stains. This is particularly effective against acidic stains.

Liquid Wax Cleaner – This wax concentrate is effective against grease and oil-based stains. Doesn’t require diluting and should be applied directly to the stain and gently scrubbed.

Tannin Spot Remover – Highly effective removal of black spots and other stains caused by things such as metal and water in contact with tannin-containing woods. ie. Oak.
